Background:
The global climate change and global warming have impacted to the community in Karanganyar regency, Central Java, particularly those who live in country side at the west slope of Lawu Mountain. The change of climate and the decline of environmental support caused real disaster for the community. Triggered by sudden heavy rain more than ever it caused landslide in many areas that resulted in many lives and wealth lost. On 26 December 2007 the rain drop was as much as 196mm, caused the landslide that caused the toll death of 62 lives,12 persons missing, 5 persons of badly injured,70 persons injured, 21 bridges broken, and 1.579 houses badly damaged.
From the quick survey done on 28 April-4 May2008, at the west slope of Lawu Mountain (especially at two districts of Tawangmangu and Ngargoyoso) there are many big and small landslides sporadically occurred at many areas, especially at the slopes of hills and river banks. At the area located at 40 Km eastern of Solo, team of quick survey have found out at least new 37 landslides at the slopes and hills, shifting the ground as much as 6m2 up to 15m2.
The condition of the project area is hilly and located at the foot of Lawu Mountain. Geo-morphologically, this area has relief of wavy up to hilly with the slanting line of300. The soil type at this area is volcanic decomposed limestone mixed with small and big stones. With the shrinked forest in this area, the ground absorption to the rain drops is not more than 100mm, so that the area is more vulnerable to the landslide.
Goal:
The local community is proactive in facing the environmental condition that has potentially vulnerable for natural disaster and the community is active in reducing the impact of global warming and/or global climate change.
Objectives:
1. There is a participatory design in managing the sustainable environment (involving all stakeholders especially local community) to create natural and social balances in the long term at the project areas.
2. There are local community members obtaining environmental education able to be initiator for pro-environment movement and having capacity in applying “think globally act locally”, under the frame of global climate change and/or global warming.
3. There are some examples of activities by the community members that pro-environment at the project area, and also they have independent planning for the future, sustainably although the project ends.
